Scott Archibald, LV Tri Club Member Vying for USAT Board Position

Scott Archibald, LV Tri Club Member one of 11 candidates vying for a USAT Southwest Region Board Position

Platform
After years of cycling between 3000 – 5000 miles annual I needed some variety and I tried triathlons in 2008. Although new to the sport of triathlons I have become an avid triathlete recently completing RAGE triathlon in Las Vegas, NV & Wildflower in Monterey County, CA with additional events scheduled in 2009.

Background & Experience:

I am a seasoned executive in Fortune 50 companies with recent experience in the non-profit world that I feel prepares me to serve on the USAT Board.

:Executive Board Member, Multisport Ministries (2008 – present). Multisport Ministries is a Christian based triathlon team focused on providing fellowship for male triathletes (Christian or not). As a member of the executive board I participate in strategic planning efforts and assist in efforts to grow the organization. I am also in the process of helping form our pro team. Within a short year we have grown from 2 to 150 members with a handful of members looking to go professional. We benefit from active support through triathletes such as Chris Lieto and Josh Merrick.
:Treasurer & Executive Director, Kravenko Foundation (2008 – present). The Kravenko foundation provides children with physical and developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience the art of dance. I am responsible for all financial and business aspects to ensure success at the Kravenko Foundation.
:Vice President Operations, Neusport Football Club (2006 – 2008). I successfully completed a $1 Million turn around at this youth soccer non-profit organization during 2007.

Goals for Board position:
First and foremost, I would like to involve a wider audience to triathlons in order to increase awareness and participation within the sport. This may include increasing participation in Duathlons, Junior and U23 events, as well as increasing overall participation in triathlons.

In addition, I feel that it is important to promote triathlons as a way that participants can make a positive and healthy impact on their lives and their community. Requiring USAT sanctioned events to meet specified green standards while also providing programs or assistance to the community will be an important part of this. Promoting health awareness as a fourth discipline of a successful triathlete is critical and the most overlooked aspect of many triathletes. Encouraging health oriented vendors to support and participate in race activities should introduce a “healthy living” aspect to participants and the community. Lastly ensuring that USAT is fiscally viable organization. Providing various levels of membership (e.g.: lifetime, gold, silver, bronze, etc.) may help increase the financial state of the organization while bringing in additional members.

Upcoming Events - Heads-Up

Hello Tri Club Members - I just wanted to start a dialogue regarding our upcoming events.

Club Kits: This week we should be recieving our 2009 Club unforms which will include tri tanks, road jerseys and tri shorts. Check them out - we should have ordering capability in the on-line store at some point in the near future. They will be available at our Iron Girl table and at the mini tri.

On May 30th we will be holding another training LV Tri Club mini- triathlon complete with announcer, racks, food - etc. at Boulder Beach. This will include a kids - mini with a swim along the beach in thigh high water so the kids can stand up. We are going to do a trial run on the kids swim course in two weeks - Mike Coltey said he would assist. Let me know if you are interested in helping put the kids course together and go to the practice swim +. In a couple of weeks.

As you know our training events are free to members. I think that is a huge bargain.

Then we are planning a training ride/course check at Nellis Base on June 7th to check out a 25 mile loop for future events - like duathlons and time trials maybe even a mini - tri.

On June 13th we are putting on our annual club family picnic and pot luck. We are working on a location now. This is a really fun event as all of you know that attended last year.

June 27th is the San Diego International Triathlon which we said earlier in the year was our away event. It is filled now - hope you were able to get in.

Frank Lowery and Heather Fischer are putting on some kids triathlons as well check our calendar. These are great local people who do an excellent job.

Swim Coaching: I just got an e-mail from Swim Las Vegas that they will be holding a two stroke clinic. http://www.swimlv.com/Welcome.html . They offer club discounts. I am going to check with the other coaches as well to see what they are doing.

Xterra Report

The "Caveman" and the "Queen" of XTERRA - Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid win XTERRA West Cup

Saturday, May 02, 2009

LOEWS LAKE LAS VEGAS RESORT, NEVADA - Defending XTERRA U.S. Pro Series and three-time World Champions Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid proved once again to be the best in the sport by surviving major challenges from a loaded pro field at the Loews XTERRA West Cup at Lake Las Vegas, Nevada .

A cool desert breeze greeted more than 350 racers to the 68-degree, clean and clear 1.5-kilometer point-to-point swim in Lake Las Vegas. It all started elegantly enough below a row of palm trees on a white sand beach in front of Loews peach-colored Mediterranean style resort.

After the familiar XTERRA cannon blast ushered off the pros in the first wave, swimmers u-turned their way out of the Loews beach cove and around the 8th hole of the Jack Nicklaus’ designed Reflection Bay golf course to another white sand beach a mile away that opened up into the great wide open of the southern Nevada desert.

Christine “Big Fish” Jeffrey beat everyone out of the water – even the top men – in a little over 20 minutes.

The early morning sunshine made it tough to see the buoys, but one racer after another commented on how nice and enjoyable the swim was. The lead pack of men were just moments behind Jeffrey with Evans, Stoltz, Seth Wealing, Branden Rakita, and Dan Hugo all coming out together, with Ironman standout Jasper Blake just a few strokes back.

The bike course is a non-stop barrage of short, steep, one and two-minute climbs followed by quick descents – all on a virtual moonscape highlighted with the various shades of red, sand, and grey that the desert dishes out. There are more than 2,000-feet of climbing on the 30km bike course (1,000+ per lap) and lots of room to pass.

“I had a couple hiccups today,” said Stoltz. “I dropped a chain and had to stop and fix that which probably cost 30 seconds and I took a digger too, and that didn’t cost much time but it sure was humbling. It’s interesting because at first I thought this course would be too easy because it’s not real technical, but then with all the riders churning up the dirt it really made a lot of sections loose and tricky.”

Welcome to 2009

As we begin a new season - I like to think about what we can do to support each other. Here is a song to remind us of our connections to each other, enjoy your adventures and travels this year - be sure to take an extra day to look around. This starts out a little slow but wait until you hit the street singer in Amsterdam........

Dave Carlson - President Las Vegas Triathlon Club

Tri club has strong showing........Victor

The Rage in the Sage triathlon took place on Sat, April 18 at Boulder Beach. Upwards of 700 athletes tackled the three distances offered, half iron, olympic and sprint. The main concern was the water temperature, it had everyone on edge, thinking about the frosty splash specially in the early morning. According to race organizers, the water chilled the thermometer at 63 degrees, although, some people tended to disagree, I for one, thougnt it was a bit cooler..........(I was born in the tropics!!!).

As far as I'm concerned, everyone succesfully completed the bone-chilling swim, no casualties. The bike course was hilly to say the least, accompanied with a bit of a head wind, very natural for SoNev!!!.........The run was hilly as well, two climbs greeted the runners and by then the temp was reaching 80 degrees!

I tip my hat to BBSC Endurance group, headed by Brogg Sterrett and his lovely sister Aubrion. They put together a fantastic show, none better anywhere with athlete safety the main goal. Our club was well represented with over 60 athletes competing in all distances and placing high as well. For further results check the
Rage's website.

Our president, Dave Carlson served as an official (marshall), he was out there making sure no one crossed the yellow line and no drafting on the bike course. Overall, it was a great event, one that no one should miss in the coming years. You can check out the photos on: www.zazoosh.com. Thanx for reading and I'll see you out training..........
